Case Study – Persimmon
Refuge island & road crossing duct
Area: Aylesbury Client: Persimmon Homes (North London)
Within our recently procured remedial project for Persimmon Homes, situated in a built up, residential area in Aylesbury, we were required to install a new refuge island crossing point, to service the live bellmouth road entrance.
Northavon Groundworks had the responsibility of undertaking all traffic management requirements, in order to ensure the working area remained safe and secure for the surrounding pedestrians in the vicinity. This also involved the segregation between working area and live public space, via the use of barriers/signage, to make the area safe for local pedestrians.
- We began with saw cutting the island working area, and breaking out the existing hardstanding materials, ensuring the working space remained tidy throughout.
- We then levelled the area on which the crossing point would be situated, and installed the kerbs, all of which coincided with the designed specification.
- Once the concrete and stone was installed and compacted into place, we then laid the tactile slabbing.
- Two ‘KEEP LEFT’ bollards were also incorporated into this islands design, accompanied by a taller, luminated bollard, to ensure all signage could also be visible at night.
- After the initial refuge island was built, we had to connect the luminated bollard into a feeder pillar, located withinin the adjacent verge.
- The feeder pillar was also procured and placed by Northavon Groundworks, and we excavated and ducted the trench going through the road to allow for all connection works to be completed.
- In order to install the road crossing duct, we needed to temporarily divert the traffic to use the opposite lane.
