This SPS is part of a bigger network serving the Bridgwater area and Northavon were approached by Wessex Water to carry out a Full Capital Maintenance Update in 2011.
The initial assessment of the works highlighted that the building was in a very poor state of repair and mechanically the system was in need of some attention.
One of the main successes with this scheme was that through upfront investigatory works, we found that the existing Storm Pumps on this site were in good condition. It was decided that rather than to replace the pumps, we had them fully overhauled by the pump manufacturer. This in itself saved over £100,000 in real terms.
A bespoke MCC Panel was designed and manufactured to bring this station up to the current Wessex Water Specification, however, due to the fact that the older pumps and motors were now to be re-used, we had to install electrolytic starters. This type of starter allowed us to operate the existing slip-ring motors within the new MCC.
Throughout this scheme we have learned a number of valuable lessons and cost savings such as these are only possible through thorough initial scoping and where possible incorporating existing design features into our proposed design.
